How to Write eBay Vinyl Listings That Actually Sell
Your eBay listing is doing three jobs at once: getting found in search, convincing a buyer your record is worth purchasing, and protecting you in any dispute. Most vinyl listings fail at all three.
Why eBay Listings Matter More Than Discogs Listings
On Discogs, the release database does most of the work - tracklist, label, pressing details, and release history are already there. You select a grade, write a brief comment, done.
On eBay, you start from a blank page. Buyers searching for a specific record won't find your listing unless you've included the right keywords in the title. Buyers who find it won't purchase unless your description gives them enough to trust the transaction.
This extra work is also an opportunity. A well-written eBay listing can outperform an identical record listed carelessly by a significant margin - both in search visibility and final sale price.
Note:
If you already sell on Discogs, you can skip writing eBay listings from scratch entirely. CrateFlow syncs your Discogs listings to eBay automatically, creating eBay-formatted listings from your existing Discogs data. You list once; CrateFlow handles eBay.
The Title Formula (80 Characters)
eBay's search is keyword-driven. Your title is your primary search signal. You have 80 characters - use all of them.
Formula:
[Artist] – [Album Title] [Year] [Label] [Country/Pressing detail] [Format] [Condition]
Examples
Miles Davis - Kind of Blue 1959 Columbia 6-Eye US Original Pressing LP VG+
The Beatles - Abbey Road 1969 Apple UK Original 1st Pressing LP Vinyl VG+
Fleetwood Mac - Rumours 1977 Warner Bros US Winchester Pressing LP Record NM
What each element does in search
- Artist name - exactly as collectors type it. "The Beatles" not "Beatles"
- Year - collectors searching for originals include the year. "1959" filters out represses
- Label - "Columbia", "Parlophone" - common search terms for collectors tracking originals by label
- Country/pressing detail - "US Original", "UK Pressing", "Japanese" - searched by buyers who know what they want
- Condition - "VG+", "NM", "Near Mint" - some buyers filter by condition keywords
Priority order when over 80 characters
- 1. Artist name
- 2. Album title
- 3. Year
- 4. Label
- 5. Pressing
- 6. Format
- 7. Condition
Writing the Description
Your description has two audiences: the buyer deciding whether to purchase, and the eBay dispute resolution system if something goes wrong. Write for both.
1: Pressing identification
Original 1959 US Columbia 6-eye label pressing. Catalogue number CL 1355. Matrix Side A: XLP 30592-1A, Side B: XLP 30593-1A.
For common represses:
1977 US Warner Bros pressing of Rumours. Catalogue number BS 3010.
2: Media condition
Describe what you see, not just grade:
Graded VG+. Light hairlines visible when held at an angle under bright directed light. Plays silently from start to finish on both sides with no ticks, pops, or surface noise. No scuffs, deep scratches, or pressing defects. Play-graded.
3: Sleeve condition
Sleeve graded VG+. Minor ring wear to front cover, not distracting. All four seams intact with no splits. Original Columbia inner sleeve included in VG condition.
4: What's included
Includes: original Columbia inner sleeve, original lyric sheet. No poster (never included with this pressing).
5: Shipping
Shipped in a rigid LP mailer with polythene outer sleeve via USPS Priority Mail with tracking. Usually dispatched within 1–2 business days.
6: Questions & returns
Message me with any questions - happy to provide additional photos. Returns accepted within 30 days if significantly not as described.
Photos That Convert
eBay allows 24 photos. For anything over $20, use at least 8. See our complete photography guide for setup details.
Minimum set (all listings)
- 1Front cover - birds-eye, white background, full frame, sharp focus
- 2Back cover - same setup
- 3Side A label - flat, overhead, label fills the frame
- 4Side B label - same
- 5Record surface condition shot - held vertically under raking light. Most important photo!
- 6Notable flaws - close-up of anything disclosed in description
Additional for records over $50
Photos and dispute protection
If a buyer claims a record arrived in worse condition than described, your listing photos are your primary evidence. A clear condition shot under raking light combined with an honest description gives you strong grounds to defend against false claims.
Auction vs Fixed Price vs Best Offer
Fixed price:
Best for common records at market price and anything under $30. Set to Good Till Cancelled so listings don't expire after 30 days.
Auction:
Best for desirable original pressings where buyer competition might push above market. Don't start at $0.99. End auctions Sunday evenings.
Best Offer:
Add to fixed-price listings over $30. Set auto-accept at 85–90% of asking price, auto-decline below 70%.
Condition Disclosures
The most common cause of eBay disputes is a buyer receiving a record in worse condition than expected. Specificity - not higher grades - is the solution.
Always disclose
- Visible hairlines (check under raking light before listing)
- Scuffs or dull areas on the playing surface
- Writing on cover or labels
- Seam splits, ring wear, corner bumps
- Whether original inner sleeve is present or absent
- Any pressing defects (pits, bubbles, off-centre pressing)
How to disclose without tanking your sale
"Minor ring wear to front cover, more visible at a direct angle - normal for a record of this age."
"Two small hairlines on Side A visible under direct light - did not affect playback when play-tested."
Buyers who know what they're getting don't leave negative feedback. Buyers who feel misled do.
Optimising for eBay Search
FAQ
How long should my eBay vinyl listing title be?
Use all 80 characters every time. Your title is your primary search mechanism and unused characters are missed opportunities.
Does the description affect eBay search ranking?
Minimally. eBay search is weighted toward the title. The description matters more for conversion and dispute protection. Fill in Item Specifics for the structured data eBay does index.
What's the best day to end an eBay auction for vinyl?
Sunday evening, 8–10pm EST. eBay traffic peaks on Sunday and more simultaneous bidders means higher final prices.
Do I need to write new eBay listings if I already sell on Discogs?
Not if you use CrateFlow. It syncs your Discogs listings to eBay automatically, creating eBay-formatted listings from your Discogs data. You list once on Discogs; eBay is handled automatically.
Summary
A well-written eBay listing consistently outperforms a lazy listing for the same record. The title formula and condition disclosure approach above work at any price point.
